Areas of Responsibility
The role of the chair of the ARTA executive is to provide direction and to undertake strategic activities to position ARTA as a peak organisation within Australia and New Zealand for best practice in research training and research scholarship administration. The chair also ensures that ARTA achieves its aims of identifying and disseminating best practice in Australasian research training and of providing professional development opportunities at a state and organisation-wide level.

Gary Johnson
Biography
Gary has been the Research Higher Degrees Unit Coordinator at the University of Queensland since October 2002, and has been part of UQ's Research & Research Training Division for 10 years. Before becoming an administrator, he was a PhD candidate in the field of early medieval history and held an Australian Postgraduate Award.
He succeeds Fiona Nolan, who stepped down from the role of chair of the ARTA executive on 1 May 2009 following the 2009 ARTA Conference in Melbourne, Australia.
